Eligibility, checked first
Model year and mileage are verified before a vehicle enters the inspection process. A vehicle that doesn't meet the age and mileage cutoff isn't eligible for certification, regardless of condition.
"Certified" is a word dealers use loosely. Volkswagen's own CPO program is specific: a defined inspection, a defined warranty term, a defined deductible. Here is exactly what qualifies—and what it costs if something breaks.
To qualify for the program, a vehicle must be less than 6 model years old and have 75,000 miles or less on the odometer. It then has to pass the inspection below before it can be sold as Certified Pre-Owned.
That gate is what separates a CPO Volkswagen from an ordinary used one—and it's also why not every trade-in or auction vehicle ends up wearing the CPO badge, even after reconditioning.

Only after a vehicle clears eligibility does it go through Volkswagen's 100+ point dealer inspection. Repairs required by that inspection use genuine Volkswagen parts and are completed before the sale.
These are Volkswagen's published CPO terms—not a dealership's paraphrase of them.
A Registered-level Certified Volkswagen Technician inspects the vehicle across mechanical systems, safety components, and interior and exterior condition. Anything that doesn't meet standard is repaired or replaced with genuine Volkswagen parts before the vehicle can be sold as certified.
Coverage begins when the vehicle's original New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires, or at the CPO sale date if that original warranty has already expired. Repairs under this warranty carry a $50 deductible per dealer visit—if more than one repair attempt is needed for the same defect, that $50 is charged only once.
Included with every qualifying CPO purchase, independent of how much of the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty remains.
Applies to certified electric Volkswagens. If the battery's capacity drops below the program's minimum threshold within that term, Volkswagen's coverage applies to the repair.
Included with every CPO purchase, so you can review the vehicle's prior ownership and condition history before you buy—not just take the inspection's word for it.
Equipped vehicles include a 3-month SiriusXM Platinum trial. On MY20-and-newer vehicles, remaining myVW app subscription benefits—like Remote Access and Safe & Secure—carry over to the new owner.
This distinction matters more than it sounds like it should.
It doesn't. If a single visit requires more than one repair attempt for the same covered defect, the $50 deductible is charged once for that visit—not once per repair line.
Only if the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty has already expired. Otherwise, the CPO Limited Warranty begins when that original coverage runs out—so a newer CPO vehicle may still be riding on its original warranty for a while first.
It isn't. The High-Voltage Battery Limited Warranty (8 years/100,000 miles) is a separate, longer term specific to the battery—layered on top of, not instead of, the standard CPO Limited Warranty.
Alabama's summer heat is hard on any vehicle's 12-volt battery and cooling systems, and it's no gentler on a high-voltage EV battery pack. Heat accelerates battery degradation faster than moderate climates do, which is exactly what the 8-year/100,000-mile High-Voltage Battery Limited Warranty is built to back up on a certified EV bought in a market like Birmingham.
The same logic applies to the standard CPO inspection: components that take a beating from summer heat and storm season are precisely the ones a 100+ point inspection is built to catch before the sale, not after.
Volkswagen's Certified Pre-Owned program uses a 100+ point dealer inspection, performed by a Registered-level Certified Volkswagen Technician, covering mechanical systems, safety components, and interior and exterior condition.
The CPO Limited Warranty covers 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first, beginning when the vehicle's New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires or at the CPO sale date if that warranty has already expired.
